About Burgess Disability Law
Burgess Disability Law is a solo law practice dedicated exclusively to federal court appeals of denied Social Security disability claims. The firm represents individuals in Colorado and Oklahoma who seek judicial review after the administrative process has concluded.
The practice is founded by attorney Jim Burgess (he/him), who brings more than a decade of experience litigating Social Security disability cases on behalf of the federal government. Before entering private practice, Mr. Burgess served as an attorney in the Social Security Administration’s Office of the General Counsel, where he defended agency decisions in federal district court. In that role, he reviewed administrative records, evaluated alleged legal errors, and briefed cases involving the full range of issues that arise in Social Security disability litigation.
That experience now informs a focused, record-driven approach to representing claimants. Rather than handling cases at every stage of the administrative process, Burgess Disability Law limits its practice to federal court appeals. This narrow focus allows for close attention to the administrative record, careful evaluation of whether reversible legal error is present, and disciplined briefing grounded in the applicable statutes, regulations, and circuit precedent.
Burgess Disability Law does not handle initial applications, reconsiderations, administrative hearings, or Appeals Council proceedings. By limiting the scope of representation, the firm is able to concentrate on the distinct legal standards that govern judicial review and on the procedural requirements of federal court practice.
